Question 1

How do Australian universities convert CGPA to percentage or WAM?

Accepted Answer

Australian universities do not use a single universal CGPA multiplier. Instead, academic standing is primarily measured via the Weighted Average Mark (WAM), which is already a mark on a 0–100 scale calculated by dividing total credit-weighted marks by total credit points: WAM = Σ(Mark × Credit Points) / Σ(Credit Points).

Question 2

What is the difference between WAM and CGPA in Australia?

Accepted Answer

WAM (Weighted Average Mark) is calculated directly from raw numerical marks (0–100) weighted by course credit points (and year level at Monash). CGPA or GPA in Australia is typically measured on a 7.0 scale (or 4.0 at Monash) by converting percentage marks into discrete grade points (High Distinction = 7, Distinction = 6, Credit = 5, Pass = 4, Fail = 0).

Question 3

How does the Australian 7-point GPA scale convert to percentage?

Accepted Answer

The Australian 7-point scale maps course percentage bands to integer grade points: High Distinction (HD: 85–100% → 7.0), Distinction (D: 75–84% → 6.0), Credit (C: 65–74% → 5.0), Pass (P: 50–64% → 4.0), and Fail (N/F: 0–49% → 0). A cumulative 7.0 GPA is the credit-weighted average of these grade points.

Question 4

How do Australian universities assess Indian or international CGPA for postgraduate entry?

Accepted Answer

Australian universities (such as Group of Eight Go8 institutions: Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW, Monash, ANU, UQ, UWA, Adelaide) assess international Bachelor degrees using institutional equivalency tables. For Indian 10-point scales, a first-class degree typically requires a 6.5–7.5+ CGPA or 60–65%+ depending on the tier of the awarding university.

Question 5

Does the University of Sydney or UNSW compute a GPA?

Accepted Answer

No. UNSW and the University of Sydney officially state that they do not calculate or publish student GPAs. Both institutions exclusively use the Weighted Average Mark (WAM) to evaluate academic performance and award honors.

Question 6

How does Monash University level-weighted WAM work?

Accepted Answer

Monash University applies a differential weighting model for undergraduate degrees where Level 1 units are weighted at 0.5× factor, while Level 2, 3, 4, and 5 units are weighted at 1.0× factor in the WAM calculation.
